Cancer Research Collaboration Fund

CRCF ANNOUNCEMENT: February 19, 2020

Today was an incredible day! Our grassroots event designed to celebrate hockey and raise money for local cancer research via the Cancer Research Collaboration Fund has taken a huge step forward. Today, we awarded Dr. Caroline Hamm and Dr. Dora Cavallo-Medved a $40,000 grant for their project aimed to: “Identify barriers to cancer patient clinical trial enrolment and develop interventional education program for Windsor-Essex”.

Dr. Hamm said today that already over 100 patients have been connected to proper clinical trials, but much more work needs to be done. With this grant money they will be able to take the project to the next level. She continued that it “will help to change the landscape of cancer care here in Windsor-Essex and across Canada by helping cancer patients everywhere find a clinical trial that is right for them.”

“We are excited to see how money raised by Play for a Cure will save lives by investing in research to get ahead of the curve” says Jeff Casey, who heads up the Play for a Cure event. “We learned that there is a great need and desire to work collaboratively in order to maximize resources and results,” says Casey, who says the Play for a Cure committee is proud to see a tangible use for the money raised that is earmarked for cancer research. “I can speak for everyone involved; the local players, NHL Alumni, sponsors, committee members and volunteers; that we know we can make a difference. We know that investing in cancer research creates opportunities for better health outcomes.”
